Paying Kiev Apartment deposit with Credit Сard.

I've booked an apartment and they want me to pay a deposit by credit card, which is fine. But I've been asked to send a photo copy of my passport and credit card along with an authorization form.

I've never been asked for these things before, anywhere, but they told me that they need the passport and credit card copies or their bank won't accept the payment.

Are you able to tell me is this normal in The Ukraine or is it some kind of scam?

I've made a small research for you. Information was obtained from a few different sources. All of them say pretty the same. Here is the summery for the subject related to your case.

Ukrainian banks do require copies of your ID and right(face) side of your credit card to process the payment. Some banks do require an authorization form, some do not.

For Ukraine the best ID is your passport since your ID card or driver license most likely won't work there. It might, but it is better do not take a risk.

It looks like these requirements are pure Ukrainian "invention" and nobody else is asking about these documents to process a credit card payment.

To make your life easier, I would recommend you to ask the apartment service managers about another form of payment for their services. PayPal or Google Checkout, for instance.

One more thing about payments in Ukraine.If you are going to exchange money in Ukraine,according to their new rules you will be required to have a passport with you. Some exchange places require a copy of the passport.
