Short trip to Kiev from the U.S.

To see Kiev is to really enjoy not being stressed.
I visited Kiev for the first time last Christmas (Ukraine 2011).

Going through customs was easy (no one asked me anything) and if you have questions or feel lost, there are very nice people there to help.

They have local cabs and independent drivers who speak English. From airport to city is about $30.00.
I stayed at an apartment (1 room) for about $64.00 a day. Not classy, but fills the needs of the night.

Internet is by Ethernet cord (not wireless) in some places. Many restaurants have English translations on their menus and prices for food are very very reasonable.

I have a tendency of over tipping which surprises many of the waiters/waitresses. They do not linger around your table with small chit chat, but they were around when I wanted something.

Currency exchange places are very abundant and the rates did not vary from different locations.

Shopping was somewhat of an issue only because of language barriers which one might expect, but it can still be done efficiently enough. People on the street seem to mind their own business and made conversations with me only after I initiated. Once they start talking, one forgets about no one being friendly.

I hope this gives some insight as to current day expectations when going to Kiev. My next trip there will be in the summer for about 30 days to see more of what Ukraine has to offer.

Thanks for your positive input, Mark!

Once again I've remembered a famous saying:"Is the glass half full, or half empty? It depends on whether you're pouring, or drinking."

It is very true that each person has its own opinion about what is ugly and what is beautiful. But at the same time OUR OWN positive attitude to things which happen to us makes our life much more optimistic and joyful. Our life goes the way we see it.

Frankly speaking, I've never seen happy complainers. I suspect that they just don exsist in this world. -:)
Thanks again!
Dina.
