History of Kharkov.

Are you going to travel Kharkov? Kharkov is the second largest city in Ukraine. It was founded in 1654. As of 2010, its population was 1,732,400. The city is the administrative center of the Kharkivskoy Oblast. It is situated at the junction of the three rivers: Lopan, Uda, and Kharkiv where they flow into the Seversky Donets watershed.

History of Kharkov can be divided into several major periods.

  • The first period lasted a little more than 100 years - from the emergence of Kharkov in 1654 as a fortified city to the provincial capital it became in 1765.

  • During the second period (from 1780 to 1896) when Kharkiv became an administrative, cultural, trade, and handicraft center of the Slobodsko-Ukrainian province.

  • The third period took only half of a century. During this period development of capitalist relations in the city was accompanied by the strong growth in trade, industry, credit and financial activities. 1869 year when the very first in Ukraine railroad has been opened can be considered as the beginning of this period. October Revolution of 1917 is the end of the third period.

  • The fourth period took seven decades after 1917. It was held under the slogan of building the socialist society in the former Soviet Union and ended up by the collapse of the totalitarian regime. This period can be broken down by dates:

    - From 1919 to 1934, when Kharkov was the capital of Ukraine;

    - 1941-1945 years, the city had experienced the hardships of the Second World War: the Nazi occupation, destruction of the city, the deaths hundreds of thousands of its citizens, and then the recovery of the ruined city economics;

    - Several decades after 1957, when Kharkov has built new residential areas and developed its infrastructure required by the stable growth of its population.
