Ukraine is a country of contrasts. On the one hand, a hard-working and a better-than-average, educated population with a Europe's richest farmland. Country has everything to live well but, to date, has not found its way through the economic shock of transition from the Soviet system.

On the other hand, in terms of the productivity of the national economy, Ukraine occupies only the 82nd place in the World, losing out to Japan, by a factor of 10.8; Israel by 7.8; Russia by 1.9; and USA by 13.2.

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe whose entire boundaries are situated within the European continent. It extends 1316 km from west to east, and 893 km north to south. Border countries: Belarus 891 km, Hungary 103 km, Moldova 939 km, Poland 526 km, Romania (south) 169 km, Romania (west) 362 km, Russia 1,576 km, Slovakia 97 km. See Ukraine Map .

Climate: Mostly temperate continental, except for the Crimea's southern coast, which has a subtropical Mediterranean climate. The average monthly temperature in winter ranges from -8° to 2° C (17.6° to 35.6° F), while summer temperatures average 17° to 25° C (62.6° to 77° F).

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census 2001 data:

The total number of the actual population of the Ukraine accounted for 48 million 457 thousand persons.

The number of the urban population accounted for 67.2%, and that of the rural population - 32.8%.

The number of men - 46.3%, and that of women - 53.7%

9 towns numbered more than half a million inhabitants, the capital of Ukraine Kyiv numbered more than 2.6 million people.

There is the tendency to the rise of the educational standard of the population and the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education accounted for 28.9 million people, that exceeds by 17.6% the corresponding characteristic of population census 1989.

Ukraine is a major producer of metals, heavy industrial equipment, ships, locomotives,rail cars,machine tools, large electrical transformers, passenger and cargo aircrafts.

Ukraine is well-known for its state-of-the-art aerospace technology and defense industry.

It also has a well-developed chemical industry that produces various plastics, tires and fertilizers.

Due to extremely fertile soil, Ukraine is a major producer and exporter of a wide variety of agricultural products: grain, sunflower oil, sugar,flax,vegetables, and dairy products.

  • services: 44% (1996)

Unemployment rate: 3.1% officially registered; large number of unregistered or underemployed workers; the International Labor Organization calculates that Ukraine's real unemployment level is around 9-10% (2005 est.).
