Ukrainian Woodwork.
From ancient traditions to modern art.

Ukrainian woodwork has tight connection to many century traditions of using wood for building houses, making furniture, musical instruments, things for everyday living, and home decorating. No wander that this kind of art is the best developed in Transcarpathia (West Ukraine) where 40 % of territory is covered with forests.

Ukrainian Woodwork. Carvin. Beer...Material: pear.
Work by Victor Kaut

At the beginning of XX century woodworking for everyday use have lost its meaning. New times, new materials and new technology came instead. But traditions of Ukrainian wood carwing are still alive. Literally every household of Transcarpathia has some kind of wood carving: architectural elements, furniture, tools and musical instruments, toys, decorative vases, boxes, candle holders, plates, sculptures of animals and people, and so on.

During your trip to West Ukraine visiting numerous marketplaces with huge selection of art works where for reasonable prices you can buy any of them is a real fun. Traditional Ukrainian carvings pretty often can be seen at Ebay actions. Below you will find what is available there at the current moment.

West Ukraine, Transcarpathia are not the only places in Ukraine where talented wood carving masters can be found. Look at these sculptures, made by Victor Kaut - a talented artist from East Ukraine. They are full of soft and warm humor and certainly will make you smile. When you go through the gallery of his works, try to use Russian version of the site. There are more sculptures there than in English version. Enjoy!
